Tissue Culture Lab Manager

We are currently looking to fill a Tissue Culture Lab Manager position. The individual in the role would be responsible for organizing and overseeing all efforts to maintain and grow our world class laboratory as required by Walters Gardens.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and enforces workplace safety standards
  • Direct systems and programs such as initiations, clean stock maintenance, internal production, and contract programs
  • Plans and works to optimize labor, order fulfillment, and product development
  • Utilizes research, testing, and quality control measures to ensure that quality and efficiency standards are met
  • Interprets and assembles reports of laboratory activities to laboratory personnel, management, other departments, and outside organizations as requested
  • Prepares and administers laboratory budgets
  • Sources and purchases lab supplies and equipment
  • Troubleshoots issues and processes including but not limited to equipment and maintenance
  • Develops and maintains quality standards for the TC Lab
  • Coordinates collaboration efforts with other departments to promote cross-departmental teamwork and success
  • Oversees implementation of advice from consultants
  • May travel offsite and/or internationally for partner lab visits and other learning opportunities up to two times per year
  • Creates and supports a positive, continuous improvement team environment
  • Oversees and coordinates construction and movement of lab to new facility


  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in applicable field (biology, chemistry, horticulture, botany); or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 1 year of management experience with direct reports required

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and manage projects independently
  • May need to on occasion work with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 suite, Google Docs, and ability to learn internal inventory software
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Some Spanish language proficiency preferred
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
  • Directly supervises 20-25 employees and additional seasonal workers in the TC Lab
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

Regional Product Manager

We are currently looking to fill a Regional Product Manager positions in various parts of the US. The goal of this positions is to promote Walters Gardens’ product to industry audiences and cultivate relationships with new and existing customers. Candidate can be based in either West Michigan or their perspective territory.

Essential Duties Include:

  • Oversee the development of customer relationships and sales growth in the defined territory
  • Service and support customers through various communication methods
  • Travel to customers to promote Walters Gardens product and present new ideas, concepts and programs. Time spent traveling, whether to customers or to Walters Gardens, would be 50 – 75%
  • Attend industry trade shows and events
  • Establish sales goals for the defined territory
  • Work with internal Walters Gardens’ departments on product availability and salability
  • Support established sales channels

Qualified applicants must have demonstrated ability of:

  • Strong communication (both written and oral), motivational and organizational skills
  • The ability to maintain a high level of customer service
  • Be passionate about people and plants
  • Show positive initiative and self-motivation
  • Multi-task and manage multiple projects independently

Internship Program

  • 13-week summer internships with flexible start/end dates
  • Full-time (40hrs/week) with half-day Fridays
